Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) appears to be capable of performing a prominent role among alternative fuels. In fact, it costs less than other types of fuels, and it is very accessible in countries where there are existing distribution infrastructures. Using CNG as a fuel for internal combustion engines results in a reduction of pollutant emissions. Its high octane number allows an increase of the compression ratio in spark ignition engines which consequently improves their efficiency. This literature review investigates the technical aspects of CNG properties, storage, safety problems, and its effect on engine performance, efficiency, and emissions.
