The use of containers for the movement of intercontinental freight traffic is increasing. Special equipment is being developed by the railways to provide a suitable environment for the overland part of the movement. Container cars must allow for efficient loading and unloading methods, and must provide protection against lading damage caused by vibration or impact. In some cases electrical power must be supplied in transit for heating or cooling purposes.
