The effectiveness of design volume and payload of a cargo aircraft is chiefly determined by the available trip payloads and their associated cargo densities. An economically designed cargo aircraft will encounter, on certain trips, volume or weight limitations, and the average achieved payload will, therefore be less than the average of projected or offered payloads.A method has been presented in this paper to determine the average achieved payload in a projected cargo operation using the probable payload and density distributions, and its application to economic evaluation of proposed design volume/payload variations has been outlined.
