When vehicles leave the carriageway they are likely to encounter aggressive, unforgiving structures. In the ensuing collisions concentrated loading from irregular shaped objects often causes extensive damage to vehicles and occupants. There is a limit to what the vehicle engineer may do to design for this type of collision but traffic and highway engineers may act to ameliorate the problem. In this study the perspective of a British highway authority accident analyst is provided and the incidence of collisions with roadside objects is portrayed in terms of demographic data and individual case studies. Some difficulties in treating collisions with roadside objects are explained and remedial action being taken at a local level in the West Midlands of Great Britain is described.
