A new hydraulic boom section has been developed that has optimum weight-to-strength ratio and is economical to manufacture. It is called the “inverted A-frame” section. The “inverted A-frame” section has better resistance to the side loads than the conventional type box section and is torsionally stiffer. Since the main mode of boom loading is bending and web crippling is often a problem, the inverted A-frame section makes it possible to use economical longitudinal stiffeners and thus hold the boom side plates to the minimum thickness.Further, the width-to-thickness ratio of the bottom flange can be regulated so that the steel is used most efficiently in compression.
