High speed centrifugation of used oils, obtained from taxi field testing of experimental lubricants, confirms that no simple relationship exists between the final cleanliness rating of an engine and the average amount of insolubles found in the used oils obtained from it. A true performance appraisal of a lubricant can best be obtained from visual examination of the components of the engine in which the lubricant was run. The high speed (25,500 g) centrifugation technique, employed in this study to determine the insolubles content of a used oil, achieved a clear-cut separation of the insolubles from the oil, even in highly dispersant lubricants. Conventional methods for determination of insolubles content in used oils had been found to be inadequate in this respect. This centrifugation technique did not coagulate polymeric and truly colloidal materials.
