In automotive gasoline engines NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) is a topic of increasing importance as competition between manufacturers becomes more heated. Customer perceptions of quality are often greatly influenced by the “sound” of the engine. The piston used in the engine is one of the major sources of mechanical noise. This paper is intended as a guide to piston designers and engine manufacturers for use in the initial concept state. Engine design goals, type of piston design and expected results can be agreed upon during the concept stage so the seemingly opposite goals of high efficiency (high cylinder pressure) and quietness of operation can be resolved.
