The continuing development of microprocessor-based control systems, improved dynamic models for engines and drive-trains, and advanced sensors provides new opportunities for application of modern control theory to automotive systems. Static calibration procedures for engine control systems are susceptable to errors due to transients and gradual variation in system parameters over time. Approaches to these problems using classical feedback and adaptive control strategies are discussed. The use of failure detection theory in developing automotive diagnostic systems is proposed as an advanced application of modern control theory.
