The charter of the Autonomous Landing Guidance (ALG) technology reinvestment project (TRP) is to develop a prototype system that will serve to integrate a variety of existing defense technologies to augment landing, take-off and ground operation in low-visibility conditions, particularly on runways that are not approved for category II (CAT II) or IIIa precision operations. Wright Laboratory is a member of the industry-government alliance that is developing the ALG system. They are responsible for addressing pilot-vehicle interface issues associated with the integration of ALG into aircraft cockpits. Wright Laboratory is conducting a study of the relationship between the amount and type of symbology displayed on the head- up display (HUD) during an ALG approach and its influence on pilot performance. This paper examines the driving assumptions, the analysis methods and their results, and the planned evaluation activities associated with determining the suitability of HUD symbology in an ALG context.
