Traffic safety at unsignalized T-junctions in rapidly urbanizing areas like Ajmer, India, is increasingly critical due to the complex traffic dynamics and high accident risks these intersections present. This study utilized Time-Exposed Time-to-Collision (TET) through video surveillance during peak hours to conduct a detailed examination of vehicle interactions, focusing on speed distribution and collision risks. The results revealed that two-wheelers dominate morning traffic, resulting in high-risk interactions with lower Time-to-Collision (TTC) values. In the evening, traffic becomes more congested with a greater presence of four-wheelers, yet critical collision risks persist due to the more diverse traffic mix. A significant finding is that vehicles turning from the minor road to the major road contribute substantially to conflict creation, often leading to severe TTC ranges (0–0.5 s). The higher speed of vehicles on the major road increases the danger as drivers of right-turning vehicles from the minor road frequently accept small gaps in the through traffic, a risky behavior. The study also examined the impact of vehicle type on turning maneuvers, revealing that right-turning vehicles are at higher risk compared to two-wheelers and heavy vehicles. These findings suggest that safety evaluation of unsignalized intersections could be effectively carried out using this approach, offering valuable insights for mitigating collision risks.
