In order to clarify the characteristics of surface water quality in Jinta County and provide a reference for the sustainable development of the economy in the county, this paper analyzed 12 water samples in the county using the single-factor water quality index method (SWQI) and comprehensive water quality index method (CWQI). The results indicate that overall water quality in the area is favorable. The SWQI assessments classify local surface water primarily as Class I water quality, while the CWQI analysis confirms this classification and highlights Class I water quality as predominant. Notably, the study identifies a significant impact of chromium (Cr) content on surface water quality. Furthermore, our findings reveal a regional disparity in water quality within the Heihe River basin, with the southern part exhibiting better water quality compared to the northern section. This discrepancy can be primarily attributed to mining activities. In light of these findings, we emphasize the importance of addressing surface water pollution stemming from mining activities in Jinta County, despite the overall good water quality. Implementing appropriate measures to mitigate pollution and sustain the quality of surface water resources is crucial for the long-term environmental and economic well-being of the region.
