Contraflow left-turn is a novel design that has emerged in recent years. Its purpose is to improve the capacity of left turns at intersections and it has received global attention. By utilizing opposite traffic lanes for left turns, it can greatly enhance the capacity of left turns while making use of existing road resources. However, due to the need for leading left turns in the phase sequence, contraflow left-turn has an impact on the bandwidth of signal coordination control. Quantifying this impact has been an urgent issue to be resolved. An analytical model of the through movement capacity was designed with contraflow left-turns impact. Yinxing Ave in Xuzhou City was selected as the real test bed for the experiment, and the traffic flow and signal timing at that location were extracted and used. TranSync software was used to perform trajectory analysis. The VISSIM microscopic simulation software was then utilized to conduct operational efficiency analysis on contraflow left-turn designs under different scenarios with contraflow left-turn design and volume cases. The results indicate that contraflow left-turn designs significantly reduce the adjacent through capacity on an arterial scale. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using contraflow left-turn designs, especially when implementing signal coordination control.
