Virtual reality training applications have been used to teach a wide variety of skill sets in multiple domains. The research reported here investigated the use of virtual reality technology to train windstorm riskRiskengineersEngineers to identify wind vulnerabilitiesVulnerabilities in an infrastructure system and to predict the potential damages in the event of a severe wind event. This windstorm riskRiskinspectionInspection process is highly subjective, depending on the skill sets of the engineersEngineers. To support the training of novice engineersEngineers, the researchers first conducted in-depth interviews to determine the needs and requirements of windstorm riskRiskengineersEngineers. Virtual environments and decision aids, both checklists and interactive predictivePredictivevisualizationsVisualizations, were then developed to support the needs identified for completing windstorm riskRiskinspectionInspection tasks. The results of controlled experimental studies found that these decision aids improved the performancePerformance and situation awareness of participants. The transfer of training effect of these decision aids was investigated in the subsequent study, the results finding that despite the absence of the decision aids, the participants’ performancePerformance and situation awareness did not decrease.
