Venus orbits closer to Earth than Mars and the energy required to send a spacecraft to Venus is less than that required to Mars. Consequently, Venus was chosen as the destination for first planetary probes by both the Soviet Union and the United States. Reliability of early spacecraft and launchers was not as good as in later years. The Soviet Union attempted to launch 21 spacecraft to explore Venus in the time period 1960–1981. Of those, only nine were successful or partly successful. Impressively, six missions landed instrumented capsules on the hellish surface of Venus, two of which returned panoramic photographs of the surface.
