Marine vessels used to support oil and gas exploration and development are classified into three categories: offshore supply vessels; production, maintenance, and construction support vessels; and construction vessels. Offshore supply vessels include crewboats, platform supply vessels, and anchor-handling towing supply vessels. Construction vessels include liftboats, derrick barges, and pipelay barges. Production maintenance and construction support vessels provide well intervention and light construction capability. We begin with a general description of vessel specifications, describe vessel construction and operating costs in general terms, and highlight the primary characteristics of each vessel class.
