Cooperation in space science (see Chapter 2) and human spaceflight (see Chapter 3) were the most high-profile areas of European-Russian collaboration. However, what became known from the 1960s as the ‘space industry’ was at least as important, because of its practical impact on the economies, trade, workforce and technological know-how of both parties. As with the topics discussed in previous chapters, the politics of the cold war were never far away. They were first illustrated by the case of the fuel for Ariane, which leads us on to the general issue of the sanctions regime.
