Developing the maneuverability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has significant importance for their adaptability and survivability in various scenarios. However, the high angle of attack (AOA) maneuver is still a challenging problem for the fixed-wing UAVs due to the complex and unsteady aerodynamics. Traditional methods often ignore the time-varying aerodynamic coefficients and treat the uncertainty of the model as a disturbance, which is inadequate for achieving high angle maneuvers. This paper discusses the hysteresis loop of aerodynamics in the high AOA maneuver and establishes a time-varying dynamic model. Based on this model, we design two cascaded backstepping nonlinear controllers for maneuver and steady flight, respectively. A switched control scheme is also proposed to recover from the high AOA maneuver. The numerical simulation is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
