Traffic congestion is one of the major problems in urban areas in developing countries. Embedded sensors (intrusive) on roads and on roadside (non-intrusive) sensors are frequently used in developed countries for collecting traffic data and predicting traffic congestion. Henceforth, probe vehicles equipped with GPS and other sensors are gaining prominence and now frequently used to collect traffic data. Probe vehicles are not requiring prior information pertaining to road parameters (e.g. number of lanes, lane width, etc.) for data collection and subsequent traffic prediction. In this paper, the sensor-based methodology to collect sensor data and prediction of traffic congestion using probe vehicles equipped with ultrasonic, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, and accelerometer sensors has been presented. The proposed system has been implemented for prevailing mixed traffic conditions in Prayagraj City. On basis of the analysis of acquired sensor data, it can be posited that the proposed integrated sensor system can suitably be used for predicting traffic patterns and congestions on urban roads under prevailing mixed traffic conditions.
