Abstract The risk of performing scheduled preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance during the overhaul period between Space Shuttle flights requires a methodology for predicting potential maintenance errors and functional failures including their impact. The methodology utilizes recorded data at NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC). A probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) framework using event trees and supporting fault trees is shown to be an effective approach to identify and rank maintenance action risks. The interface with conducting cost-benefit analysis relative to risk reduction maintenance actions is presented.
