The global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has a substantial influence on people’s way of life, and travel behaviours. Many activities that people used to do have changed to online shopping, work from home, school from home and so on, resulting in a drop in the usage of transportation. As a result of infection concerns and travel limitations, intercity travel has reduced dramatically during the pandemic, and many people prefer private vehicles to public transportation. The study examined the mode choice behaviour of intercity travel during COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Kerala, India. The data was compiled through the use of an online questionnaire that probed about socio demographic characteristics, intercity travel characteristics, and factors influencing mode choice both prior to and during COVID-19. Wilcoxon signed rank test was employed to assess factors affecting mode choice for intercity travel prior to and during COVID-19, whereas MultiNomial Logit (MNL) models were used to simulate mode choice for intercity travel within the state more than 60 km during COVID-19 and a model was developed for travel outside the state during COVID-19. The study indicated that the respondents have placed high priority on factors related to COVID-19 concerns such as cleanliness, safety and security, infection concern, social distance, passengers wearing mask, digital payment and waiting for less congested during the pandemic. Frequency of the trip and preference for public transport had reduced during the pandemic.
