Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in modern day has widespread application in various reconnaissance, agriculture, military, and civilian operations. Their wide domain of application has placed the development of drone technology at forefront. The prime parameter for these UAVs is the endurance or flight time. In UAVs, endurance is problematic because of the limited size of fuel systems available. Energy harvesting has scope for UAV application because it not only offers the potential to increase their flight time but also ensures that there is no significant addition of weight. This paper investigates the possibility of harvesting vibration energy for NACA 2412 fixed wing of an UAV by finding the optimized location for piezoelectric patch to get maximum voltage output. In ANSYS software, the modal analysis of NACA 2412 profile wing of span 0.6 m is carried out by considering one end as fixed. The mode shapes generated are used to get optimized location to place the piezoelectric patch. The fixed wing of UAV with piezo-patch placed is subjected to harmonically varying pressure load of 213.934 Pa, and the behavior of the wing and its frequency response is analyzed in terms of displacement and voltage as output.
