Abstract A central aim of transit authorities is to reduce psychological barriers that prevent people, especially car drivers, from using public transport. With FAHRSMART passengers do not have to be informed on fare structure, they do not have to worry about having cash and are automatically charged with the most favourable fare. Each passenger gets a booking card containing an electronic data processing unit which has to be inserted into an electronic card validator when boarding and leaving the bus. With the collected data accounting of minimum fare and improved computer-aided scheduling is possible.
