The objective of this chapter is to develop a methodology to determine intersection delay which is the basis to evaluate intersection performance and determine level of service (LOS). Intersection delay can be determined by analyzing queuing at all approaches of the intersection where queuing theory becomes an essential tool. In addition, intersection delay can be obtained through traffic flow modeling using commercial traffic simulation software tools such as Synchro (Trafficware Synchro: https://www.trafficware.com/synchro.html), CORSIM (TSIS-CORSIM: https://mctrans.ce.ufl.edu/mct/index.php/tsis-corsim/), TransModeler (Caliper TransModeler: https://www.caliper.com/transmodeler/default.htm), etc. Moreover, intersection delay can be empirically measured from the field by following procedures developed in Manual of Transportation Engineering Studies by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) (The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Manual of transportation engineering studies, ITE, Washington, DC, 2010).
