The phrase mission architecture is one often used by engineers in deciding how to piece together the elements required for a space mission, whether that mission involves sending robotic explorers to Mars or launching astronauts into low Earth orbit (LEO). Mission architecture also describes a combination of modes specific to the mission, the assigning of flight elements such as the Launch Vehicle (LV) and, in the case of establishing a lunar outpost, a description of the activities performed on the lunar surface. What follows is a description of the process resulting in the choice of the mission mode that will return humans to the Moon.
