This article describes the research on key technologies and lessons learned by Coal Mine Robotics Research Institute of China University of Mining and Technology in the design, development and applications of Coal Mine Rescue Robots (CMRRs) for detection, survey, inspection and rescue missions. The explosion-proof, walking, communication, sensing, localization, navigation and motion control techniques of CMRRs are primary focused on in this study. In particular, the special considerations in the design processes for harsh and complicated coal mine working conditions are discussed. The lessons of successes, errors, unsolved challenges and recommendations are shared with the robotics community to promote the development of the mining robotics industry. At the very least, these experiences can be directly taken into account during the design and development of similar or new kinds of coal mine robots without much repetitive basic research work.
