Large diameter solid propellant boosters are first employed by the United States on the Titan III for military payloads and NASA deep space missions to the planets. NASA draws on this SRB technology for inclusion as part of the Space Transportation System known as the Space Shuttle. The SRBs provide NASA with the heavy-lift capability it needs to reach low-Earth orbit for the 30-year Shuttle program.
This flight-proven SRB performance is selected by NASA for the Ares V but later assigned to the approved Space Launch System. The changes include the addition of a fifth SRB segment for additional performance and other needed changes for the Space Launch System. Unlike the Shuttle SRBs, those used on SLS are not recovered, refurbished, and reused to save on cost.
