Heterogeneous microswarms consisting of different types of building blocks have richer functionality than homogeneous microswarms. This chapter introduces a heterogeneous colloidal microswarm with hierarchical and cooperative functionalities inspired by swarms with adaptive morphology and functional divisions in nature. The microswarm consists of core–shell structured magnetic nanoparticles, exhibiting a vortex-like or ribbon-like pattern driven by corresponding magnetic fields. The vortex-like pattern is conducive to rapid movement in a tortuous environment, while the ribbon-like pattern enables passing through narrow areas. Transformation between the two patterns can be completed quickly by changing the magnetic field, allowing the microswarm to adapt to complex environments. Three types of building blocks specialized by doxorubicin, glucose oxidase, and manganese ion, respectively, endow the heterogeneous microswarm with three different anticancer functions, i.e., chemotherapy, starvation therapy, and chemodynamic therapy. Different building blocks enable combination cancer therapy through domino reactions by cooperatively destroying the nucleus, reducing the energy supply, and generating toxic radicals.
