Vehicular driving cycles are speed vs. time diagrams that depict typical driving patterns within a specific city or region. These diagrams are currently used to assess fuel consumption and exhaust emissions and to configure the powertrains of both new and existing vehicles. Establishing a local driving cycle, including an altitude profile, is imperative for the latter application. One of the presently employed techniques involves analyzing a sample of trips using specific parameters such as average speed, maximum acceleration, and idling time. Subsequently, minimum weighted differences are applied to derive the typical driving cycle. In this study, a methodology based on the vehicle's energy demand to overcome drag force (Fd), rolling resistance (Rx), inertia (Ri), and road gradient resistance (Rg) was used. This methodology has been applied to obtain typical Cuenca driving cycles under urban conditions.
