Injuries and fatalities due to road traffic accidents are a grave and rising public health issue in India. At the time when road traffic fatalities across the globe is falling, India’s road safety record is deteriorating. In the span of a decade, from 2012 to 2022, road traffic fatalities in India increased by 23%, while it dropped by 5% across the globe. Consequently, India’s share in global road fatalities ascended from 11.1% in 2012 to 14.4% in 2022. Nowadays, every hour there are about 20 deaths and 50 injuries resulting from road accidents. Road accidents have now earned India a dubious distinction; with 171,100 fatalities per year, India has surpassed China in the incidence of deaths due to traffic crashes. If the past ten years trend continues, road traffic fatalities in India will cross the mark of 200,000 by 2030. There is thus a pressing need to take appropriate measures to reduce road crashes and resultant injuries and fatalities. The most optimum way to mitigate the problem of road crashes in India would be through an integrated approach which focuses on four key measures - reducing exposure to road accident risk, encouraging road users to behave according to traffic rules, building self-explaining and forgiving roads, and stringent vehicle safety standards.
