The pulsejet engine as an alternative means for generating thrust, via a hot exhaust jet, is introduced. Design considerations and limitations of the valved and valveless pulsejet approaches are discussed. The cyclic wave-based operation of the engine is described, and some mathematical analysis is applied toward performance estimation. Additional propulsion system technologies related to the pulsejet approach are also discussed in this chapter: wave rotors and pulse detonation engines.
