Abstract Due to the large capital investment and high risk associated with space activities, developing countries have not yet been able to benefit from the use of space technology to provide valuable resource and environmental data. However, with the advent of small satellite technology, the prospects for involvement in space activities by developing countries have greatly increased. Currently, developing countries face significant hurdles in implementing space technology and extending their technical capabilities; this is largely attributed to the lack of awareness on the part of governments and the user community of the benefits derived from space technology. The information acquired from small satellites would enable developing countries to better manage their resources, thereby providing an effective tool for achieving sustainable development.
