After a brief overview of the historical development of rail vehicle brakes, frictional brakes are first discussed. For this purpose, terms such as adhesion and slip as well as the dependence of the coefficients of friction on the sliding speed are explained. This is followed by a presentation of the forces and moments on the braked vehicle. In addition to the hand brake and the spring-applied brake, the various types of air brakes are explained (non-automatic and automatic, single-solvent and multiple-solvent air brakes; conversion of brake type). Block, disc and drum brakes for rail vehicles are shown, and finally the magnetic rail brake. The eddy current brake is mentioned as a non-friction brake. The chapter ends with the calculation of braking distances and an explanation of the term “brake weight” used in railway operation.
