Abstract Astronomers have devoted centuries of study and observation to explaining and predicting the movements of the heavenly bodies and they dislike any behavior which does not fit in with their theories of forecasts. Once the period of consternation involving the wanderings of Uranus came to an end with the discovery of Neptune in 1846, equilibrium was restored and the Solar System once more seemed to be complete. Then, after about 50 years of peace and stability, observers noticed that Uranus seemed to be straying again, if only very slowlu and very slightly.
