Identifying the rotor position is an important aspect of motor control: the servo loop needs to know by how much the actual and set positions (and speeds) differ from each other in order to calculate the right amount of current correction; the electronic commutation algorithm needs to know where the permanent magnets are positioned with respect to the windings in order to generate the correct voltage values for each phase. In general, the higher the resolution of the encoder, the higher the control quality that can be achieved.
