Abstract Stationary dangerous goods railway cars in sidings are a major source of concern for railroad companies. The potential threat of personal injury and property damage is especially significant when incompatible dangerous goods are involved. Depending on the nature of the dangerous goods, these railway cars may be prone to fires, explosions, and toxic impacts. This paper investigates the threat of stationary dangerous goods railway cars in sidings and reviews quantitative risk analysis techniques in a real case study. The results of this paper can be used to mitigate the risk of stationary dangerous goods cars in sidings through improved operational strategies.
