This paper presents an update for the estimations of the European Cyclists’ Federation on selected socio-economic impacts of cycling. It uses the most recent data sources, like a new EU-wide passenger mobility survey and the latest versions of the EU Handbook on the External Costs of Transport as well as the World Health Organisation’s HEAT tool for walking and cycling, to calculate the impacts of cycling the fields of health, greenhouse gas emissions savings, and selected environmental impacts. In these fields, we estimate total external benefits of cycling to correspond to a monetary value of ca. €119 billion annually for the EU-27. In health, we estimate that more than 30,000 premature deaths are prevented each year in the EU. The paper also identifies data and research gaps, e.g. concerning the diversion rates from other modes caused by cycling, the levels and impacts of electric cycling in the EU, or morbidity benefits of cycling as opposed to mortality benefits in the field of health.
