Growth and progress of transportation and the economy are inextricably linked. With that being said, it is crucial not to brush aside the environment due to the transportation sector, which releases massive amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The escalating number of vehicles in India has exacerbated the issue with the sector’s share of GHG emissions steadily increasing, underlining the importance of adopting sustainable transportation approaches. This chapter examines the link between GHG emissions and sustainable transport alternatives to highlight the importance of sustainable transport. It investigates the unique context of electric vehicles (EVs) and public transportation in India, as well as the country's potential for adopting sustainable transportation solutions to build sustainable cities. Simultaneously, the chapter explores various interventions that can reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions within the transportation sector. By emphasizing the significance of e-mobility, the chapter highlights its potential as a key driver of sustainable growth and mobility and its contribution to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
