Transport sector is one of the primary agents of CO2 ejection. As an initiative to lessen the greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector, the twenty-first century has initiated the substitution of conventional internal combustion engine (ICE)-driven vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs). A number of issues such as driving range anxiety, scarcity of charging stations, dumb charging, etc. inhibit the public adoption of EVs. Charging infrastructure planning for a city is a challenging problem involving both transport and power distribution networks. Placing chargers at weak points in the distribution network may result in voltage fluctuations, power loss, and power quality-related problems. Moreover, the location of charging station must be decided considering the route followed of EV drivers and charging demand of the EVs. Hence, motivated by all the aforementioned factors, this chapter aims to delve into charging infrastructure planning for cities. This chapter presents a systematic and comprehensive review of the charging infrastructure planning for cities by analyzing the findings of the existing research efforts of this paradigm qualitatively and quantitatively. It is expected that this work will be a guide for city planners to plan the charging infrastructure for smart cities.
