Abstract By 2025, urban residents will be 63% of the world population, as reported by the latest forecast. The issue of implementation of effective communications solutions is seen as one of the major challenges for the municipalities in the twenty-first century. These solutions are designed to encourage the development of public transport, to facilitate the administration of private transport and help protect the city’s infrastructure and environment. The implementation of intelligent urban transport systems brings tangible benefits to agglomeration: it increases safety, improves communication, helps to reduce air pollution and to reduce damage to roads and pavements, and also brings the financial impact on urban investments. In particular, the article discusses the ecological value of telematics applications in the metropolises. On the background data on environmental pollution in cities, and on the legal background in this area the potential of intelligent traffic management systems is presented.
