Biologically inspired self-organizing systems are distributed, fast, reactive, and computationally very simple. They can be employed to build new platform control systems. After a short introduction to self-organizing systems, applications to damage control in a frigate cooling water system and ship evacuation illustrate the practical applicability of the approach.
