In this paper, we discuss several conceptual developments in travel demand modelling that have the potential to enrich existing modelling frameworks. The alternative concepts and approaches that we highlight focus on incorporating psychological factors in choice models. Specifically, we provide a brief review of attempts to include psychological factors into discrete choice models, emphasize work on mental representations underlying choice behaviour, articulate the importance of addressing the generation of dynamically changing needs and desires, and finally discuss some ongoing work in the area of modelling joint decision making in the context of social activities and travel.
