The major maneuvering features of a twin propeller/twin rudder ship during berthing and unberthing can be summarized as follows. First, the forward speed of the ship is very low or zero. Second, the operative area is restricted in that the ship is operated in either shallow water or the quay area. In this study, we performed a series of experiments to find out how the thrust loss varies according to variation in water depth or the intervals between the ship and the quay area. From the results, it was found that the thrust loss tend to increase as the ship approaches the quay area or enters shallow water. It was noted that the thrust loss decreases when the ship approaches the quay area too closely. The experimental approach was adopted to find out the interaction effects between various control units in the push–pull mode. The results present that the tangential force acting on the rudder should be considered separately and that the bank suction effect between the hull and the quay developed an additional force.
