The semiconductor device characteristics required for automotive ignition systems are quite specific, although they vary with the design of the individual customer's module. There are a number of basic requirements, however, which they share. In designing an automotive-ignition Darlington, there are a number of constraints which should be considered. The device design and processing must be compatible with existing power-transistor technology for easy manufacture. In the development time cycle considered, nickel-lead metallisation and a non-passivated mesa structure with mechanised mounting in the standard TO-3 package were chosen to meet performance and high-reliability requirements. Perhaps most importantly, the device should be capable of high-volume production and relatively inexpensive manufacture.
