Definition of the lightning threat to aircraft electrical systems is problematic within the aviation industry. The complexity of typical aircraft wiring makes it difficult or impossible, on a purely analytical basis, to model the interaction of lightning-produced electromagnetic fields with the aircraft electrical system. On the other hand, data obtained from ground tests are not representative of in-flight conditions because of differences in airframe resonances and current distribution. This report presents an approach that combines measured data with an analytical model for the interaction of the lightning channel with the airframe. A continuous wave (CW) transfer function measurement was made on a cargo aircraft fuel sensor circuit relating voltage on the fuel sensor circuit to current input at the wingtip. A pulse measurement for this circuit was also made which served as a check on the validity of the CW data. The CW data were then used, along with the analytical interaction model, to predict the in-flight threat. The SAE scaling law was compared with the CW-predicted in-flight threat to determine its accuracy for this particular case.
