Electric vehicles must meet the same requirements as cars with ic motors. Maximum speed in urban and suburban traffic must reach 70 to 80 km/h, gradeability 16 to 20 %. With today's semiconductor technologies application of three-phase ac drive systems is not economical as yet. In this paper, a drive system based on a separately excited dc motor is presented. Instead of a local charger, the vehicle can be equipped with an on-board charger. For this, the control unit of the motor can be used. In a prototype of the drive system the field chopper additionally functions as a charger. Step-down of the line voltage is provided by an autotransformer. It protects the entire system by means of a fault-current circuit breaker with very low trigger currents.
