The current status of automotive electronics and its future trends are discussed in this article. Semiconductor technology has been the driving force for progress in automotive electronics. Microelectronics bring more highly integrated functions to automotive systems at the same cost. The highly integrated CMOS process will replace other processes of LSIs for this field in the near future. High performance sensors, such as solid-state pressure sensors and hot-wire air flow sensors, are now becoming the key devices of some systems. Actuators will also be improved through the use of power semiconductor and sensor technologies. In the future, automotive electronic systems will play a more important role because they are expected to improve fuel economy, exhaust emissions, safety, driveability and traffic flow.
