Selective (brush) plating has taken a number of progressive steps over the years. Initial efforts were aimed at touch-up of defective bath plating. As the system evolved to an engineering method for repairing electrical and mechanical components, emphasis was put on rebuilding and resizing small components where the amount of metal needed was generally not more than a few thousands of an inch. At today's stage of development, however, more and more work is being done with substantial buildups on larger, heavier duty components. Thicknesses up to 0.040 in (1 mm) and more on areas up to 10 sq ft (one square meter) and over, while not making up a large proportion of selective plating operations, are growing in number and importance. The article shows, that one of the railroad industry's major repair problems can be solved by selective (brush) plating.
