The subject of my presentation is an application of the first type, used in the schedule planning department of AF and called ARGHOS. This acronym means Aide a la realisation et a la gestion des horaires saisonniers'. Of course, this is French for obvious reasons. But there is an English decoding too - and this just illustrates the fact that the system should be perfectly bilingual. In English it reads 'Automated Routines for the Generation and Handling of Schedules'. Generation, to start with, looks quite easy. Flight schedules, to a passenger, is a timetable telling him on what day and at what time he can leave A to B, and when he will be there. Marketing is anxious to meet his requirements and has very much the same view. Air France has devoted some 10 years of thinking to the problem. The right approach was recognized to be a data base system generally open to all engaged in or dependent of aircraft scheduling, and coordinating their work. I am not going to review all functional or technical aspects of the system. I shall simply highlight a number of interesting features.
