The effectiveness of U.S. Navy high frequency (HF) communications in a shipboard environment can be limited by the ability of the receiving subsystem to cope with interference caused by simultaneously operating, collocated, high power transmitters. In existing shipboard RF architectures, the limited dynamic range of the receiver is accommodated by frequency management and the use of tuned filters to provide isolation from high level fundamental signals. Although these methods are effective, they constrain spectrum access, frequency agility and instantaneous bandwidth characteristics essential to the introduction of jam-resistant and intercept resistant waveforms. To minimize these constraints a new shipboard wideband architecture is being developed. In this architecture the receiving subsystem adaptive interference canceller (RSAIC) is used to reduce the impact of locally generated fundamental signals. This function in the new system is comparable to that provided by a receiver multicoupler or preselector in present narrowband systems. This paper discusses the concept of adaptive interference cancellation in its application to an HF receiving subsystem.
