High frequency (HF) communication systems play an important role in Naval tractical communications. Consistent with this role is the need for a system that is jam resistant. Frequency agile techniques that provide adequate jamming resistance are not compatible with existing HF systems which use narrowband mechanically tuned components in the radio frequency (RF) distribution architecture. To overcome the deficiencies of existing systems, a new wideband HF RF technology is being developed by the U.S. Navy. Since the system must provide transmitting and receiving capabilities simultaneously, techniques must be developed to control and limit electromagnetic interference in the local shipboard environment. This paper discusses the role of the electrically small antenna in achieving the desired wideband system noise performance. Also, two HF transmitting antennas having operating bandwidths on the order of 6 and 7 to 1 are described.
